Has anyone experienced a cracked topside on your boat? Just today I discovered a vertical crack on the molded seatback. It has been 15-35-F during the last three weeks. Still, I've had our boat four years and nothing like this before.

ABS cracks are one of the topics that keep the Daysailer forum alive! They do happen and, for the most part, are easily fixed. Last time I posted was in http://forums.hunter.sailboatowners.com/showthread.php?t=102896 but there are many other examples.

It might help to post a couple pictures or, at least, describe the crack a little better. There are a couple of members who had severe crack problems, most of use glue the crack using the repair instructions refered to in the above link and go on sailing.

In my opinion, 170 is a very repairable boat, even with larger cracks. Take a look through the DaySailer forum and you will see just about every issue discussed.

Hi txjim,
Can Devcon be used to repair a small crack in the Hunter fibreglass daysailers? I just noticed a very fine 2 inch crack in my newish H15 running aft from the cockpit drain (scupper?). Still suffering from the 'madness of the new boat owner' I wanted to make sure that the crack didn't get any longer.

A few questions first... Is this gelcoat crack or a real fiberglass issue? Was this caused by an impact or is it a warranty issue?

Gellcoat repairs are pretty straightforward but I'd use West System or another epoxy for fiberglass issues.

Any pictures available?

I'd say it is a gelcoat crack. It is really a hairline crack. I was wondering if I should drill a very small hole with my dremel at the ends of the crack to stop it going any further, gouge the crack a little and then fill it with whatever. When I get home from work I'll take and post a photo.
Appreciate any advice.
Cheers

I'm surprised to hear about cracks on the new Hunter 15. I thought the new materials (fiberglass) would stand up a lot better than the previous material that was used in the Hunter 170 and 146.

This year I left my 170 out in the elements. So far we've had probably 7 days of 15-20 degrees on the F scale. Since my boat is covered, I can only get a look in from the end, but so far I don't see any cracks.

Knock on wood...

This is a very fine crack, just a hairline and I know that I am being totally obsessive compulsive about it but large cracks must have been babies once. So how to remove this (I have already compounded the area a few times)?
