I've been hearing a cracking sound coming from the rudder while underway and upon investigation have found a 3 inch crack in the fiberglass surrounding where the rudder tube comes through the hull itself. No water leaks so far. Browsing the forums it looks as if the temporary solution is to cover it with more fiberglass, or epoxy. Is this a viable solution to get me through the season? If so, what exactly should I use? I also have a picture if it will help.

Poptop, you have a problem!

I do not know the set-up for the rudder on a C27 but anytime you have excessive play or noise coming from the rudder itself you could soon experence a total failure or loss in the rudder assembly. There are no easy repairs.
The loss of the rudder could result in massive flooding through the rudder housing.
The loss of the use of the rudder could cause a roll over of the boat if caught in large seas and winds.
Your best and safest method to solve this condition is to have a professional sailboat repairman look at this assembly. He can tell you if you can repair the problem or if the pro's need to correct it.
I would be very skeptical of sailing her until she is inspected.
Sorry and good luck finding out what is wrong.
