I tried to put this question into the Smaller Boat forum earlier, but couldn't find it except in archive; thanks Jeff for your response. Anyway, my 1974 C22 has a fine crack across the sole of the cockpit. Its been there for years as a cosmetic crack. But this fall after hosing it down for storage, I found that there was water between the gelcoat and the plywood base. Its now in storage and should be well dried out by springtime. What can I do then to seal the crack and still leave the floor looking presentable?

epoxy

If it were mine I would grind back the crack and repair using epoxy, then repaint the sole. West System has some great manuals you could be looking at while your letting it dry out. I picked the ones I have up at West Marine, they were free. Good luck.

West is the best

West System Epoxy (by Gugeon Bros not West Marine) is a very liquidy epoxy that will seep everywhere. I used it to seal a 30' wood mast earlier this year. All the fine cracks above the spreaders are now part of the solid wood. You'll have to find some way of compressing the old FG and wood after the epoxy flows into the space between them. And to keep the epoxy from just spilling out into your bilge. It needs 70-80 F to cure properly and the fumes are awful.
