Covers for Dock Pilings?

The pilings on our slip are unfinished 6x6. The issue is that in using spring lines, they get all snagged up on the rough edges. I’m looking for some simple solution, maybe just ask the marina if I can sand the edges smooth? I’m also looking for something almost like a pool noodle but more durable, with a notch to fit against the square edge. Thoughts?

Leather pathes for the section of line circling the pilings.

Our you could break out a sander and give them a shave...

We have a glove shop that tans deer, elk, and such skins. They are a source of leather.

Or go to your local fire department (volunteer or professional) and see if they will give you some old firehose, which can be cut to length. It can also be split open and layered if you want wider pieces. You can also use it on your lines for chafe protection.

I bought a roll of used fire hose online and have it for these special occasions.

Good Luck

our marina has 4x4's and some people buy plastic covers from Grainger that slip over.

I've used decommissioned fire hose for chafe protection with great success. For tidal situations where the line must ride along a piling, I have also cut a length of light chain (half an old bicycle lock chain worked well) and secured it with a hardware store shackle. I half drove a couple of large (12d) nails near the bottom of the tidal range so it wouldn't slide to the bottom. This eliminated the friction and a good deal of line rub noise as well.

Leave your lines on the pilings (with chafe protection) when you go sailing and pick them up when you return. Use a separate set for any marinas you may visit. No one around here takes their docklines with them.
