covering a storage area

Our 1982 H27 has storage behind the settees in the cabin. A former owner covered the openings with tightly gathered curtains on small quater inch round rods common in kitchens. These are a pain and will be replaced. Has someone found a system to cover the access holes which stays closed in rough weather but allows you to get to stuff with a minimum of trouble. I can think of a bunch of possibilities but do not want to reinvent the wheel. Andy s/v Baroque

How about sunbrella with snaps?

Andy: Have you thought about making sunbrella covers with snaps. This will keep the area covered and would look tidy too.

More Sunbrella

Steve, Gee thanks, now Adrianne will want to buy more Sunbrella! Actually a pretty good idea. Great meeting you the other day, and nice Marina there. We look forward to seeing you again when we sail up that way next week. Dan Jonas (S/V Feije)

Steve, cloth with snaps good idea, but sunbrella?

Steve, Seems like a very good solution, however, I have not worked with sunbrella and from comments have always considered it an outside material. Does it have advantages down below? Andy

Sure, you can use anything that is strong enough.

Andy: Sure you can use this down below. For the size pieces that you need, you may be able to find some stuff at the local canvas shop as scrapes. There is not any reason why you could not use vinyl or something else either. I am sure that you can find something to go with whatever interior fabric that you may be sporting. When you put in the snaps, just make sure that the edges are reinforced (double up on the material). Put a snap in each corner and then across the top and sides to keep everything in place. Just remember that you may get mildew and mold on these pieces so you should have something that cleans up easy too.
