Coupling removal….

Hello,
So have to replace my cutlass bearing which included sliding shaft down a bit to retrieve broken parts in the shaft tube. Prop came off fine, disconnected the coupling just fine and retrieved the pieces…… success. However decided now that I’m this far along I will change My volvo shaft gland that is now 17 years in service. Having a tough time with removing the coupling off of the shaft. It is a tapered shaft with a key and securing nut on the end. Removed the nut.Put a puller on it…… nothing. Put heat on it while the puller was in place….. nothing. Tapped with hammer……. Nothing. So I ended up spraying PB Blaster inside the end and along the key way on the aft part of coupling, left the puller on and left. Figured I would go back daily, add a little heat, hit it a few times and keep tension on it hoping one day I show up and it released itself. Hopefully by the weekend it’s done!
Any other advice????

thanks
Greg

Perhaps a more robust puller. Algonquin makes one specifically for this purpose.

why does it appear the set screw is still in-place?
This coupling does not have a set screw. Has a single locking nut that you can see above the coupling on the paper towel. This locks the shaft in place on the coupling..... with a key way. The other 4 bolts are to attach to trans coupling.

Thanks

You say it doesn't have a "set screw" but to my old eyes I think I see a "square thing" in the picture on the coupling picture just to the right of the puller clamp on the coupling. That sure looks like a set screw to me. I have two of those on my coupling with a lock wire between them. My eyes have deceived me before and maybe it is the head of the bolt that goes with the "nut" that still appears to be on the coupling but it looks more like you couldn't get the bolt out because the set screw out because the set screw was in the way.

That is what I thought until I enlarged the photo. It is one of the coupling bolts. Three are lying on the sole, one is still in the couplin.

Roy.... do you have a part number for this..... can't seem to find. Customer service is trying to find as well. Nothing beats the right tool.....

Thanks!
Greg
I found one at Deepblueyachtsupply.com. About $40. Service is good as are the prices for couplings and bearings.

That is what I thought too (I edited my postt) but in thinking on it why would you leave only one bolt in place and take all the others out. A reasonable "guess" is that something interferred with pulling the bolt out so you just took the nut off, disconnected the flange and then put the nut back on to protect the threads. Been there in working on cars many a times. Obviously just an observation based on a picture. I warned you my eyes aren't that great.

Nope.... that is one of the 4 coupling bolts. I put in in to help keep the shaft from spinning when I cranked on the puller....... Used the claw of a hammer that grabbed it against the hull so shaft would not spin. It just is going through one of the coupling attachment holes

@NYSail Thanks for the clarification. It is easy for the eyes to play tricks on us based on what we have seen in the past and the fact that many of us have set screws instead of a nut on the end of the shaft.

Oh well, the fixing nut off, penetrating oil all over, the puller tokqued up, some heat, a few raps with a hammer... gave-up and went home... when I came back to the boat it was off! The boat was only 5 or six years old. I'm due this week 1,500 hours since last change. I hope it comes off.

That is what I am hoping...... Just in case, I bought a new puller as recommended above by RoyS!
