Couple of Head Problems

Got a couple of head issues in my 86 C-36 that have me thinking about replacing my head. The main issue is that the water intake pump is not bringing in water. I tried rebuilding it, but had no affect. I also have a small leak somewhere in the base. The head is a Groco HE, which is not made anymore. Should I just replace it with the Groco HF or go to the WC Head-Mate or Raritan Compact? I have no real experience doing this stuff and am worried about things not going together easily. Thanks for the input. Les Murray s/v Ceilidh 86 C-36 #560

HEAD CASE

Les, In your case (big 36 with lots of space) get yourself a Raritan PH II. You will never be sorry. I put one in my Catalina after seeing a friend's go for 20 years before a rebuild. Absolutely the best head below $500 or so. All the other low price compacts are throw-aways. Best of luck. James in Dana Point, Calif. S/V Tesori

I'd definitely replace it...

With which one is up to you...but my choice would be the Raritan Cricket. A bit more than any of the 3 you named, but worth it because instead of the usual piston/cylinder pump beside the bowl, it has a diaphragm pump under the bowl...no moving parts to wear and require rebuilding...fits in the same space as a Compact--AND is available with the larger "highboy" bowl that's closer to household size/height. Practical Sailor just rated it one of the two best toilets under $500 (the other one is the Raritan PH II).
