Counter weight for the salon table

We were wondering if anyone has a problem with the counter weight that rests inside the the tube (i.e. the support tube for the mast)? When lifting and lowering the table to make the bed up, it sounds like the counter weight may be rusted. We hear a slight grinding noise. The tube should be stainless steel and the only thing we can think of is that the weight is rusted. Note: It's possible that we had some leakage at the mast step (boot). Any ideas or suggestions? Thanks, John & Karen, "Hi"Biscus!

not mine...

mine hasn't done this but rusted counter weight wouldn't surprise me. Probably won't hurt anything either. I would just be sure that the grinding wasn't caused by the pulley hat the counter weight line passes over. Bill Murray SV Good Faith H29.5 #175

Dem Chains don't bother me no mo

The counterweight on my 310 has been a nuisance from Day 1. It bangs around most annoyingly under sail - and the idea of a heavy weight grinding away at the most critical structural member of the boat is not my idea of fun... So I adjust the counterweight line to keep it down on the cabin sole and non-functional. We just man-handle (people-handle?) the table up when needed.
