Could someone please tell me what this is?

Hi,

I posted this under the "Engines and Propulsion" topic and received no response so I thought I would try over here.

The attached photo is from a Yanmar 4JH3E. It is of a petcock that is attached to the working side of the transmission. I cannot find anything regarding what this is or what it does in my owners manual.

When you open this valve a clear water with a metallic odor comes out.

Obviously I am not an engine guy and am fairly new to this so any help would be appreciated.

Try hooking a hose or tube to it. Put the end of the hose in a container of some sort. Start your engine and then open the valve. See what you get. If it is under pressure its either part of the raw water loop or the antifreeze loop. Should be interesting for sure.

Have you sorted out the valve?
Take a larger picture so we can see its location.
It does look like a drain. Did you taste the fluid??

My guess is a engine coolant drain out of the engine block.. What the heck, open it, see what comes out.

Most Yanmar have a Kanzaki tranny, but some, including the 4JH3E could possibly run a ZF or Hurth. You say that when you open this petcock, clear water with a metallic odor comes out. Could it be that yours is a water-cooled tranny ? If so, there should also be in & out hoses coming to and going out of the transmission. As Rick suggested, open it briefly with engine running and see if what comes out is under pressure. And if it is, then it has to be part of the cooling system.
