Cotter vs. "Damnit rings"

Looking for thoughts on the advantage / disadvantage of using cotter pins as opposed to rings on rigging. -Doug s/v BRENDA GAIL

Rings are easier to reuse

Where you might need to remove things (backstay for haul-out is an example). I also think they don't catch on things as easy.

Rings

Rings are exceeding more practical for most reasons you can think of-- the best being that (at least in theory) they can be removed with NO tools (use fingernail) and reused as well. Every time you re-flex a cotter pin with the pliers you are weakening it. Keep about a thousand of varying sizes on hand all the time. Also rings do not catch on anything and always give a boat a must more 'yacht-y' look than having ugly cotter pins sticking out and making every tunrnbuckle look like a boyhood go-cart axle. JC 2
