Can anyone give me a ballpark idea of what it should cost to have shrouds and stays with swaged fittings replaced by a professional rigger on a Hunter 33? Thanks for any help.
$800.00, The cheapest way to do that is to contact the company that made the rigging for your boat, The company is Seco South 2050 34th Way, Largo, FL 33771(727) 536-1924 I did mine (all the rigging) for $800.00,Local "rigger" wanted $1900 its not hard to do, by the way.
Probably a dumb question but what are the logistics of actually replacing the rigging up the mast? I guess you replace one at a time, do you have a line holding the mast in place in the direction of the piece you are replacing? I know I can replace the rigging but I'm just curious about how actually to go about the replacement.
If I were replacing all the rigging, I would take the mast down, using the mast crane that is available at most marinas supporting sailboats. A crew of 4 can easily do this (especially if one has experience) and it will allow your to perform a number of other mast maintenance and cleaning chores at the same time.Alternatively, you certainly can replace one at a time if you have a bosun's chair, or other means of getting to the top of the mast. But making a trip up the mast for each piece of standing rigging is probably more work than just taking down the stick. And there certainly is a disadvantage trying to do the work aloft. It's hard to stay calm and focused up there!DavidLady Lillie(a 27 foot little sister)
I was able to have all standing rigging replaced for $1500 (including labor). However, I received quotes for as high as $3200. Shop around. You should be able to find something cheaper in VA than I can in CA.
The March issue of Sailing magazine is very timely for Spring outfitters. John Kretschmer replaces all rigging with the new Suncor terminals(Related Link). He has 19 wires on his 45-foot ketch! The preceding article is about re-bedding chainplates. And the following article is a Spring commissioning checklist. Excellent issue. I plan to carry about 60 feet of wire and the necessary terminals to repair any loss of shrouds or stays. Problem is, according to the Related Link article, you cannot purchase Suncor terminals for 9/32" wire. Might have to go with Sta-Lok.
Don't be afraid of Sta-lok's. Rerigged my 27 13 years ago and very easy and no issues since. My boat weathered hurricane Andrew at Homstead Bayfront Park with only slight loosening of rigging. Guess that is ultimate test.
I was at Homestead Bayfront Marina, good substantial concrete docks.Spent two days getting ready, took off bimini, boom, sail off Harken then ran chain off dock with 3/4"sliced lines[two to each quarter]ran anchor rode around pilings to keep out errant intruders.Everybody laughed at me saying would go north.Came right down entrance channel which saved boat as only on eyewall where tornados were a short time.Lost vhf antenna and shore power inlet. Wish i could say same for home, this i why i now live aboard.
