Cost of new cushions

Hello all,
I am thinking about replacing the cushions on my 1988 Newport sloop.
V berth, port & starboard settees with full back cushions, nav station cushion & back, and a couple of arm rests.
Can anyone give me a range of what I might expect to pay?
I haven't gotten any estimates yet.
Thanks, ST

Somewhere between $2500 and $4000.. for all new foam and durable material. Local auto upholsterers can help or
Talk to the U.S. Yacht Cushion folks

Well you have a few more than I do and I had some reupholstered, some I had new cushions too but to start from new you may be looking at $1,500-2,000.

I had 2 in the vbirth reupholstered
3 back cushions reupholstered
3 long seats new foam (upgraded) and reupholstered.

That was just at $1000

Thanks. My other alternative is to find a place where I can have them cleaned and deodorized (including the foam). Any suggestions or opinions an any national chains like Stanley Steamer or Serv Pro? For me, ths would not be a DIY. This is really more of an odor problem. Other than the odor, the cushions themselves are in very good shape.

We have usually gone down the DIY road. Cleaning the foam is not very difficult in warm weather. Hose & water, your choice of liquid soap, and your time. We had fun with the project by doing "the dance of Joy"(Thank you Robin Williams) to work the soapy water into the foam. Then rinse the foam several times. Let the cushion foam dry thoroughly in the sun.

Certainly any mold/mildew stain will be difficult to remove. The "smell" can probably be removed using Pure Ayre, a spray product that is great! We have used it to successfully eliminate diesel fuel odor from the engine area following my fuel filter/fuel pump/fuel tank projects. Pure Ayre is available online from Amazon and perhaps locally from stores.

Well, the engine compartment is certainly on my list!
How did you apply the Pure Ayre? Did you you spray it directly on the engine, or just in the compartment, or both?

Thanks, ST

We just had our main cabin cushions done. Lady in the Ortega river area. She did the labor for under 500 dollars. That was for long bottom(7 foot) 3 backs. 2 small(3 foot and 2 foot) and backs. This did not include foam. THis was labor only, we bought our own fabric which was some 200 dollars.

She did a very nice job. Her first name was Theresa but I don't remember any more. I got her name from The sailmaker on San Juan ave. If you want more you can check with him or I can.

Because you are only dealing with an odor problem and the fabric / foam is satisfactory, I would definitely try to clean them before replacing. I cleaned mine a couple of years ago with good results. Remove the fabric from the foam inserts. If the fabric is Sunbrella, you can machine wash with cold water using 8 ounces bleach and a mild detergeant on gentle cycle. I would make sure that the washer is filled with water/bleach/detergent, before placing the fabric in the washer, to prevent concentrated bleach from contacting the material. You can also do this in a bath tub. To clean the foam, use 4 ounces of bleach and 2 ounces of detergent per gallon of water. Soak the foam for 15 to 20 minutes, rinse, dry as much as possible outdoors and then bring inside in climate controlled area for final drying. It would be a good idea to replace the fabric coverings on the foam before the fabric completely dries to prevent shrinkage and excess wrinkles. The idea is to get rid of mildew, dirt, sweat, and salt from the foam and fabric. Finally, after the foam & fabric are completely dry, spray a coating of 303 fabric guard on the fabric covering after it is reinstalled on the foam cushion. (for sunbrella fabrics). I think that you will be pleased with the results.

Needless to say, I only cleaned my salon cushions because the coverings were soiled and somewhat oderous. We hated the lime green fabric and wanted to replace them as soon as practical. The cost to replace five salon cushions was about $1500. We selected an expensive fabric that resists fluid penetration and is supposedly used on furniture on cruise ships. The foam and backings were only 5 years old and we reused those components. We replaced the fabric covering and zippers only. Labor costs were about $1100. and material costs were about $500. You definitely want to check a few sources for price & quality.

The Pure Ayre came as a spray. We spray directly on the foam and on any fabric surfaces. Actually, we spray above those surfaces and let the mist settle onto the material. We did not soak anything. In the engine area I sprayed Pure Ayre on the inside of the wooden surfaces. I also used the mist the same way as an air freshener spray would be used.

Check out the website for JSI in St Pete. There is a wealth of information on selecting foam & fabrics. You can also browse thru their extensive fabric inventory. There is also an article on cleaning cushions that I quoted from. They have been in the cushion business for a long time and supposedly have patterns for most boats. I have never dealt with them personally; however, you might want to check out website and talk to them.

We did our own. We purchased the foam online (opted for a Dacron wrap) and did the upholstery ourselves. We also changed the configuration to provide a queen size bed. This made 9 separate pieces. I think it was less than $1,000 but took some work. It looks great and feels much better than the old worn out stock cushions.
