Several ways to tell the difference...
Hard water mineral deposits tend to also build up in hoses...whereas flakes from corrosion will be flecks in your water. Mineral deposits tend to be a bit lumpy and crumbly...pieces of corroded metal tend to be flat flakes and break instead of crumble.
