The two bladed prop that I believe came with my boat, considering that I am the third owner, will only propel it at around 3.5 knots at 2100 rpm even with a clean bottom). Is a two bladed prop with more pitch the answer to improve speed or is a three bladed prop the answer? The charter company I am using says they think folding props are not reliable enough for the charter environment. If you have been through this delima please let me know how you solved your performance under power and what prop you purchased.

Don't really think you need to worry about the

speed at 2100 rpms. The engine on your boat is designed to run at 2500-3000 rpms not 2100. You need to determine what kind of speed you are getting out of the the engine at the optimum engine speed. At this point you can determine if you have or need another prop. Check out the archives on this issue and look at previous threads on this issue too. If you boat is in a charter, I do not think I would spend the money to put on a high priced prop regardless of the speed.

Something Is Very Wrong, Robert...

..doubtful it is the prop unless someone damaged it and it is out of pitch. You have a constricted exhaust elbow, the injectors are bad or other engine problem. You should be able to pull 3600 RPM in clear water with ease. If you can't it is wrong. Wide open throttle (WOT) should push the boat near 7 knots with a calibrated knot meter. I had one for 9 years. You need a skilled mechanic to go over this. Someone with an understanding of high speed diesels. Check the archives on the subject. Good luck. Rick D.

Postscript, Robert..

..I read your post to mean the engine would not pull more than 2100 RPM. If it does pull 3600 WOT, you are OK. Yanmars should run at 80-90% of max rate for cruise. If not, they tend to coke up. RD

Prop web page...

I posted this web page a while ago. It worked like a charm for me. If you have all the necessary information, you should get a propeller suggestion in 2 or 3 days. Check it out... http://www.gpcprop.com/PropSize.htm Ike
