My '88 Yanmar manual says to us3 CD 30 wght engine oil. Yet, when I try and find it, it is not available I've been told CD is an older version that has been replaced by newer versions with CG ratings. is this true? Also, I've been told I can use a 10w-30 CG. "It works just as good as 30-wgt when it warms up, yet, due to its lighter weight (the 10w part, I guess) it will help the engine start easier on those clod spring and fall days here in Lake Michigan. Any thoughts?

Racin' Rick:

Rick: I think you will find that they keep updating the specs on oils for both compression and spark engines. What you are really working with here is the C (compression) and the following letter indicates the newer specifications. So CG is probably the new standard. Also I think that there were several engine failures with 10-30 oils in general. It have been generally replaced by 15W-40. That is what Yanmar refers to as their Performance oil. I personally use Delo 30wt but have considered going to the 15W-40 in the future.

Same Questione Posed

I posed the same question to Mack Boring in Massachusetts and they told me any grade greater than CD is OK to use. So go ahead and use the Cx grade. On a personal basis, I continue to use 30W oil since it has performed so well for me in the past here in RI.

And a 1952 Ford---

was great in it's time, but I wouldn't care to drive one any further than around the corner. 15W 40, to the latest specification, IS THE OIL! Quicker flow and pressure on cold start than 30 wt, superior lubrication at running oil temperature. What more could you ask?

Mack Boring

I have a 91 Hunter 30T with the same engine the previous owner used Rotolla 40W. I called Hunter and they told me to contact Mack Boring. When I called them they said Yanmar recom. 15-40W oil, so I have switched to the multi plend oil. However, they did say 30W would be ok. Jim

Diesel lube oil

The latest and best advise recommends 15W-40 oil for diesel application. You can tell what's good by reading the label. For years we used Quaker State 10W-30 for all our oil changes. Suddenly there appeared the 15W-40 oil and a new tag on the 10W-30 that states "for gasoline engines". The 15W-40 label reads that it is formulated for "diesel engines including those that are turbocharged and supercharged". I had always been a believer in picking a good oil and sticking with it. Today's technology contradicts that philosophy. I think I would now recommend sticking with a given brand and using the latest development. We use Quaker State largely because it is widely available and boat owners can always get a quart, no matter where they are, and not have to change brands.

Synthetic oil

Following the thread about oil qualities I would like to pose a question regarding synthetic oils. I see on labels they are suitable for diesels and claim improved adhesion during idle periods. Has anyone knowledge about such lubricants? Dave

NO syntetic oil for 2GM20..

this was a clear advise posted few months ago in a Brithis sailing magazine by a Yanmar specialist. ( by now I forgot why..) but it has negative effects on marine Yanamrs.
