Hello everyone, I have an O'day 30 which was set on a unknown make cradle last spring and wonder if this is the correct location of the hull rests. ?? I also wonder if anyone knows the "Model" of this 1979 30' O'Day??
Many Thanks
Ron

That looks like a 1979 30' O'Day :D

Oday made one 30 ft model that year and I don't think they made different models of the same size also the cradle looks fine

I have not been able to find much on this port hole layout. I wondered about the cradle as this is new to this boat and I didn't know it there was a built in frame to take the weight of the hull more safely and perhaps help the hull stay straight and not only rely on the keel to support everything.
Many Thanks
Ron

Sailboats are supported by the keel and the popetts from the cradle on the hull just keep it from tipping over....if you put a lot of strain on the hull it will flex and maybe crack
Are you going to transport it?

Transporting on Cradle

Hello, Yes I will be moving the O'Day about 100 miles on the cradle, I wondered if the hull had an actual frame or extra support section for the O'Day cradle to help put the weight up through the entire hull. so basically the boat is built to stand on the keel and the cradle just stops it from tipping over as you said. I am amazed it hasn't sagged over the past 30* years.
Any suggestions before the big move??
Many Thanks
Ron

Get a pro and do a search on the subject cause its been posted before and I believe with a large boat like yours there might be issues while on the highway......height,width,permits....etc

Ron, your boat is sitting a little bit too far forward on the cradle. The aft, builkhead stringer is located at the bottom of the companion way where the engine and sink cabinets come down, the front would be just about a foot ahead of the mast, where you enter the head. the amidships pads will not be against any stringer location and don't need to be. Your aft pads should be large because the engine really really makes the "aft" heavy.

Hi Denise, and thanks for your reply. I also thought the boat was a little too forward as the rear pads didn't seem to have any good firm place to rest. The boat will be in the water May 12 so next fall I will move her back a foot but will double check with your dimensions. again Many Thanks

O'DAY didn't really produce a different model of the 30 with all opening ports, in place of the standard fixed ports....... however, a few boats did leave the factory this way (as a "custom order"?). There was one moored in Wareham, MA a few years ago..... looks "weird" to me as I'm used to the "standard" port layout.... but it must be nice having all that ventilation!

This must have been some sort of "factory" option though, because the first time that I saw an O'DAY 28 "in the flesh", she had all opening ports just like your 30. That is not the "standard" port layout on the 28 either.

I'll add my vote to the ones saying that the boat appears too far forward on that cradle.

What I would do Ron is; when you go to transport your boat, just shore up under the bow section with anything like a straight powerboat stand or a separate support made up of 6X6s.

If your boat's keel was sitting on blocks with just the boat stands to support it, most boatyards would use about seven stands, three on each side and one under the bow section for excellent support on dry land.

If you're planning on transporting your boat on a flatbed trailer, I would definitely add support under the bow.
