correct condensing unit

How do you determine the correct condensing unit? I was able to pick up a freezer box at an auction that was supposed to be part of a bait and tackle station on a big sportfish. It is insulated and has a plate around the inside which has fittings for the freon lines. I need to know now how to determine the correct condensing unit to drive it. I want a 115v unit and have found one which says it is a high temperature 1/2 hp R12 and is air cooled but I have no idea if this would work. What are the basics I should be looking for? Grant. Thanks for any guidance you can give me.

Condensing unit

It is difficult to determine which condensing unit is the correct size with a custom built box like what you have. There are two ways of metering the freon to the evaporator, cap tube and expansion valve. Cap tube system take smaller condensing units. Most custom units like what you have normally take condensing units in the 1/4 - 1/3 hp range. The best thing to do is find a qualified marine refrigeration technician to look at the box and give you assistance in determining the correct condensing unit. The box will have to be evacuated and cleaned up no matter what type of condenser you use. Sorry but there are not quick short answers to your question. Phil

Condensing Unit

Condensing units are not only rated by their horsepower, but also by their temperature range. High temp units have a smaller displacement to horsepower ratio, than do low temp units. A high temp unit operating at low temperatures may overheat and fail prematurly.

Thanks

Thanks for the response...I figured I would have to get a technician to evacuate and charge the unit but had hoped to save some money by picking up a good unit at a little better price. You guys have been a big help...thankyou for taking the time to respond. Happy Boating.
