What do you use to take the core out from around the hole you drilled to add a rope clutch. How much bigger should the plate you are going to use than the fitting you are adding/example a rope clutch.

I will drill out a hole larger the the thru hole size for the bolt I'm using.
Then take a nail and bend into a "L" shape and put it in the drill chuck. Running that for a bit removed the core.
Then I'll tape the bottom size of the hole and fill the whole thing with epoxy.
After it dries, drill the thru hole for the bolt.

gpdno has the textbook answer, well except for the nail. I would use a router or a simple knife as the core only has to be removed about 1/4" beyond the hole diameter.

even easier is to use one of the "L" shaped hex keys....they come in almost all sizes and fit the drill chuck easily...Even using one by hand will work in some cases....

just be careful not to snag you shirt sleeve/tail or a finger, even at low rpm if power drilling.

all the best

Teacher63;

I am not sure if you alrready have drilled a hole yet or not. Generally, Hunter added alumininum bakcing plates ecapsulated in the figerglass where the rope clutches would go. To see if there is any plating, I used a small 1/8 or smaller drill bit to drill into the area to see if any metal shavings came out. If that happenned, , then all you need to do is drill a smaller hole than the bolt size and then use a tap to thread it for the bolts and that is really all you need to do. I believe the correct size bolts was a 1/4 by 20 stainless steel of course but the head of the bolt will determine if flat or oval is appropiate as you need to make sure the head does not interfere with the travel of the lline. Bolt may be smaller depending on the size and manufacturer of the rope clutch. Make sure to caulk well and do not use 5200 above water line except for the hull to deck joints which the manufactures recommend usage.

Please advise me personally if this is the case. If not, I will explain what I would do then. Maybe a photo would be handy. I use to be Hunter small boat dealership too.
