copper coat

I did a bit of research and have decided on C-Guard copper paint for the Albin Ballad. I emailed them and recieved prompt response and clear answers to my questions, and a PDF brochure including application and quantity calculation instructions (the Ballad needs three "kits").

One of the reasons I chose them is that two coats are required, rather than Coppercoat\'s four coats.

Email from Tony Grimes at C-Guard:
"Hi Peter,
Here are the answers to your various queries;
Price per kit is £60-00 as you would not be charged our VAT.
We send via Fedex.
.......
Shelf life is at least 2 years, the resin component occasionally crystallises but is cleared by warming to ca.30C for 10 mins.
No problem with not immersing straightaway, some craft have been left for 12 months.
Shoud be OK with Marinetex as it seems to be solvent-free.
So, apart from getting the product to you all is plain sailing(as it were!).
TTFN
Tony."

There\'s another company, but their paint is not water-based, so shipping is expensive and application a smelly job.

I haven\'t made the purchase yet as I\'m a few months from launch. I stripped the bottom to bare glass so it\'s all ready to go.

Hope this helps,
Peter

My favorite part is "fast cruising above 15 knots will keep the hull clean". I'm envious, your Vega is much faster than mine...-Tim

Just another note on the C-Guard copper bottom paint I plan to use,
here's a link to the info and application procedure brochure:

Ric,
Best to contact Tony Grimes using the "Contact" on their website.
That said, Tony told me "Shelf life is at least 2 years, the resin component occasionally crystallises but is cleared by warming to ca.30C for 10 mins.
No problem with not immersing straightaway, some craft have been left for 12 months."

I would think the copper would oxidize in the air, and require a scuffing before relaunching.

Hi Peter,

Did you already do the calculations for a Vega so that you know how much to order for 2 coats on the bottom?

Thanks,
Jack

Jack,
According to the formula in the brochure, to get hull surface area
LWL X (Beam + Draft) X 0.75 factor for full keel boats.
7.01 X (2.44 + 1.19) X 0.75 = 19.08 sq. meters

Eack "pack" covers about 8 sq. meters so you'd need about 2 1/2 packs, which seems about right as the Ballad 30 needs 3 packs (o.50 factor for fin keel boats) I don't know if they sell half packs ... you'd probably have to buy 3, but a little extra is always better than not quite enough!
