Cooling sea-water stops flowing

The cooling sea water for my Volvo Penta 2002 flows fine for about 10
minutes then stops. I have been diving under the bottom to check the inlet and I'm
not sure how to trouble shoot it. I can feel it and it feels like it has
something in it, maybe a barnacle. Should I attempt to crush this? I don't
want to damage the skin fittings. What can I do while it is in the water? Can
you overhaul the sea water pump while it is in the water? The valves are
really rusty. I know I really need to take her to a boat yard if I can get her
there sailing with the right tide. I need to change all the hose attachments
and hoses.
