Cooling problems on a catalina 30

I periodically have a cooling problem on an old Yanmar YSE12. The water flows fine when I (finally!) get the engine started. But when I start it on the return trip to the harbor after a day of sailing, it does not seem to pump the water properly. I've had work done on the exhaust system. I've checked the elbow where the exhaust and water feed into the collector, and I've checked and replaced the anti-syphen valve. I also verified that I'm getting water to the collector. I've also recently changed all of the hoses, but I was wondering if I needed to close the through hull valve for the raw water feed while sailing. Anybody have problems similiar to mine? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Jack

I have had similar problems but only periodically. Some how a bubble or something gets into the intake hose. I always have to disconnect the line and suck water through the water pump. I've been thinking of installing abulb like those used on outboard motors to purge water through the pump without disconnecting the hose. I did this on my fuel line for bleeding and it works like a champ. Hope this helps. Sean
