RE: Ice Might be Better
I have an article in Sail’s new magazine Boat Works, titled, Keeping Your Cool, that compares ice boxes to refrigeration. The chart in the article shows that refrigeration is not needed to keep food and drinks cold for day sailing up to 48 hours. It is possible to extend the 48 hours by buying more ice but there are certain foods that will not keep fresh any longer than that at ice box temperatures. Sail boats used for racing may be faster if they do not have refrigeration because of the additional battery weight needed to support 12 volt refrigeration.
