This weekend we did our first trip across Lake Ontario in our new Hunter 33. Did I mention we are new sailors and this was the first time we were sailing that long? Hubby checked the engine compartment to ensure everything is the way it should be. Once we arrived at our destination Hubby examined the engine comparment again - and low and behold the coolant reservoir was empty! How could a 5 hr sail (plus some motoring along the way) drain all that coolant??? Well, as it turned out the clamp on the hose that the coolant goes through wasn't tighten properly and it was spewing out and fallling behind the engine! To make a long story, short, it all worked out in the end.

However, wanted to advise any new 2012 Hunter 33 boat owners to check that clamp! We spent a good 1 hr cleaning out all the coolant.

Happy sailing!

Now that we know you are new sailors, I will ask you what you filled the coolant reservoir with? If it was plain water that is technically okay. If you used coolant, be sure that it was the same stuff that was originally used in the engine. If you mix different coolants together you can end up with a mess and possibly a new heat exchanger (couple thousand $$$$).

The key: have the service guy's phone # handy & we read the manual. I can't remember exactly what we filled it up with, but it was red coloured, which a bunch of us thought was odd. But that's what Hunter does.

Good to know what coolant you need. If it's a new out of the factory boat you should check ALL of the rest of the hose clamps.
