Cooking problems

On my 1978 Hunter 30' I have a Kenyon cooktop. This unit was alcohol but has been changed to kerosene. Anyone know how to change it back to alcohol, or some other solution. The stove will not work now, and I do not like the smell of kerosene!

Not a good idea in the first place.

Claude: Pressurized alcohol was not a good idea in the first place. So my advice to you is to go with an Origo unit. I think you may find that the problem of retro fitting an Origo drop in unit, is that they are smaller than your original unit. If you can figure out a way to plug the original hole and then recut a new one for the Origo you will be fine. Just talked to my friend with a H'30 and he is toying with the same delima.

Keeping it simple

Finaly I agree with Steve! While I never blew myself up with the pressurized alcohol stove it was a pain in the butt and more work than it was worth. Lighting was a challenge and I'll admit it made me nervous. I happened on a good deal on an Origo so I installed it in place of the Kenyon. Replacing your two top burners and the oven burner with alcohol burners would run in the vacinity of $150 which would take you a good way towards a new Origo. Sounds like a no brainer to me.

KEEP WHAT YOU HAVE

Kero is hotter, thus cooks faster, the reason you smell it is because it's not burning efficiently, kero is cheaper, more accessable, twice as hot, and least dangerous.

If you don't absolutely have to have an oven...

consider a table top butane burner. On our last boat we had a pressure alcohol unit and it went right into the dumpster. I replaced the counter top (more counter top space and new found storage) and bought the butane unit for about $50 (West Marine/Boat US.) It has a self igniter, easy to use, put it where you want it (even in the cockpit!) and then stow it when not in use. It was great. Even though we now have CNG on our new boat we still have it (the new owner didn't want it) and use it while land camping.
