Converting ZF 10 transmission to ZF 12

I'm trying to figure out what to do as far as a replacement transmission. Currently have a ZF 10M (on a Perkins M30 in a Catalina 320). My mechanic is urging a replacement (rather than rebuilt the existing). Two options - same ZF 10M or new ZF 12M. ZF 12 is touted as a replacement, but is 1/2" longer, the prop shaft is .4" lower, but doesn't extend as low. Anybody do this? Words of wisdom?

Why replace instead of rebuild? Rebuilding would seem to be a much more economical approach. Last year I had my transmission rebuilt for under $2K, a new one would have cost ~$7K.

Try contacting East Coast Marine Transmission. Rick comes well recommended. Used to work for Mack Boring until they stopped doing repairs.

thanks for the suggestion of East Coast Marine. I talked with Rick. He actually doesn't recommend rebuilding ZF10s now. Problem is parts availability and cost (rebuild kits cost almost as much as a new ZF12). So right now, it looks like I'll have my mechanic put in the ZF12. Just hope he can do it by raising the engine .4" on the mounts, rather than have to change the strut!

Glad I could help. My transmission is a Kanzaki, which is a Hurth built for Yanmar.
