I'm looking at a Cat 22 and was wondering if anyone has converted from a tiller to a wheel.........any and all comments are appreciated. I'm new to sailing, and maybe I'm all wrong, but a wheel looks more appealing to me then a tiller.......right or wrong. Thanks.

don't do it.....

.. besides being an inappropriately expensive conversion, a amall boat doesn't require the power of a wheel. As you become more experienced you will learn to love the tiller and the feel of the helm it gives you. As an investment, putting wheel steering on a small boat will not increase its value. Finally, in my opinion, no offense to you, but a wheel on any sailboat under 26 ft looks absurd and pretentious.

wheel

If you want a small Catalina with a wheel get a 250. I don't think it makes any sense to put a wheel on a C22. BTW I had a C22 with a tiller. My current boat, a Newport 28 has a wheel. I really like the wheel, but it doesn't make sense on a small boat like the C22. Barry

my thoughts

i had a very simple wheel system on my o'day 23. it saved a lot of room in the cockpit. i could feel the tug on the rudder similar to, but not as sensitive as a rudder. the system i had was an edson push/pull cable type. this is similar to a throttle cable with the push rod bracket on the transom that attached to a fitting on the transom hung rudder.
