Hi, has anyone converted their starboard water tank to a diesel tank. We have a water maker and would retain the 2 port tanks. We are looking to increase our fuel reserve and heard this can be done. Looking to see if anyone has done this and if so how they made it all fit together.

I think that the general consensus is that fuel should NOT be stored in conventional poly tanks. You should use a cross linked polyethylene for fuel storage.

You may want to ask some companies that make these tanks what they think.

Bad idea

The water tanks in the 49 are a fairly thin plastic compared to the fuel tank.
Hunter actually had a second fuel tank option. I'm not sure where it was located, but I suspect in the bow.
They used a transfer pump to get fuel from tank #2 to the main tank
It's documented in the H49 service docs

Good luck

For your safety and that of your guests it's more than general consensus against a conversion. The USCG, ABYC and by extension likely your insurance carrier have very specific requirements when it comes to fuel systems, tanks included. There are pressure testing requirements (3 psi), fire test requirements, slosh test requirements (baffles) and labeling requirements. Fittings located other than at the very top of the tank, although allowable with diesel (I think, don't quote me), is bad form.

Please be very careful.
