I am thinking of converting my 272 le from diesel to outboard. It needs repairs to the exhaust manifold to the tune of $3000. I can buy an electric start Honda 9.9 for about the same amount. Does it pay to throw that kind of money into a 22 year old engine or spend the money on a new outboard. I have pedestal steering. Will that make a difference. I know one of the 272 models was made with an outboard. Steve (in Cape Cod)

Depends on several things. Will your transom support an outboard? Do you sail in a lake or in a bay or offshore? In a lake no problem, if other you might find the outboard underpowered and a problem in chop keeping the prop in the water.

re: converting diesel to outboard on 272

Thank you all for your input. I have decided to repair the diesel exhaust manifold rather than converting to outboard. The engine is sound and switching would devalue the boat. I have been happy with the diesel up to now so repairing it seems the better alternative. Thanks again - Happy Sailing.
