Here I come again!
Yesterday ( given to me by my friends at the salvage yard) I got wht looks like a control head for the auto pilot that I have been gathering pieces from over last few months: first I got the wheel, then I got the compass, now this thing says Raytheon ST- 2000 +. It looks like a giant cell phone, longer than 1 foot, with acord attached. It looks like an older model, but can I assume it will do the job as the new types?

It sounds like a tiller autopilot to me. Don't know if anyone has beem able to succesfully adapt a tiller unit to a destroyer wheel.

If you have a wheel and a tiller pilot they don't mix. I've been thinking of finding a way to mount a tiller pilot and connect it to a spoke at the bottom of the wheel as a backup. It'd work in a limited basis. I think... Not as a primary.

My H37C came with a tiller pilot for the wheel. It had about ten inches of throw or five inches either side of neutral. Obviously the closer to the wheel hub the more control but with not enough power. Move it sixteen inches from the hub and five inches of throw might get you twenty degrees of steering. Might be OK on a calm day while you go take a leak and get a beer.

No, I'm still here, just been busy with a few things: taking care of my '78 RR ( right hand drive, no problem, lived in South Africa 25 years, needs rear brake caliper) some great cooking cooking (used too have my own portuguese restaurant) and some other stuff; but now I am back in the business of cannodling my boat, and work on it.
By the way, I think I should lubricate the quadrant that operates the wheel... what should I use? Should I alsso lubricate the chain that is hidden under the pedesta? Marine greese? WD-40 ? What in your opinion is the best thing to use? I don't know how the hell I will fit in such small space, but lost about 10 pounds so far just for stuff like that: allow me a cruel chuckle while I recal how difficult it was to fit into the SB lazarette...
