Control Cables (Throttle, Transmission, and Fuel Shut-Off)

I need to replace my three cables in the subject. The throttle cable has
failed completely with the inner cable coming through the sheath. The fuel
shut-off hasn't completely failed yet but will soon. The transmission
cable is OK but I will replace it too.

How do I know what to order?? The throttle and transmission cables have a
red covering with no markings. I haven't removed the cables and the
connection between the end-fittings to the inner cable aren't visible and I
don't know if they are permanently part of the cable unit or removable. My
hesitancy to remove the cables is just because they were adjusted OK when
last in the water.

How do I pursue this?? The engine is an MD6A with the 1.91:1 reduction
gear and a forward/reverse transmission (no Combi).

I suspect that my cables were too long and the extra curve accelerated the
wear.

thanx,,,

I am also interested in this.
My throttle cable inards popped out of the sheath a few years back and i used some epoxy putty to repair temporarily. The issue went away and hasnt percolated to the top of my list again. lol. But I can not get the last little bit from the throttle unless i go to the motor and nudge the actual throttle lever.

*Throttle & Shifter Cables*
I still haven't taken a cable out. It isn't apparent that the end fittings
are screw attached to the cable but that is what I want to believe. If I
wish enough....

Presuming the end fittings do screw on/off I'm hoping that something like
the following will work:

It is for 10-32 screw fittings and the length is to be determined.

*Fuel Shut-Off Cable*
In the MD6 - MD7 parts catalog I think I've found the parts. There are two
parts listed for the cable of presumably different lengths. The part
numbers are 818471-7 and 818478-0. These numbers are for the cable only
and I haven't validated them or looked into buying one yet. The following
is appallingly priced and I don't know if it even would fit:

I have been entertaining the delusion that maybe I can use bicycle cables
but I'd have to be pretty desperate for that.

My nearest so-called chandlery is about 70 miles away and I will be near
there Sunday. I plan to walk in with my throttle cable and see what I
learn. I'll report back,,,,,

The throttle cable is out and is labeled "morse 33c 2017" and I can't tell
that the 2017 means anything.

Some please correct me if I am wrong, but I seem to remember that Teleflex
bought Morse. I believe Teleflex still uses the 33c number on some of their
cables. By the way, if you are taking a long trip, especially to a foreign
country, buy a spare cable the length of the longest cable you have. I
broke a cable in Mexico once, in La Paz, and it took a couple days to find
one that would replace it with.

The 33c is the cable type, the other number has to do with the measurement
length. Just measure the cable you have and buy one that length or a little
longer (shorter won't work :). A slightly longer cable works just fine and
on one of my boats allowed me to route it a little differently to correct a
funny bend. Outside of having extra cable, one even a few feet or more
longer won't matter one bit.

Most cables have the correct end fittings. There are a few strange fittings
out there, but the Vega uses the most common on the control cables, at
least mine does.

Not sure about the shutdown cable as I got rid of all my Volvo stuff when I
went over to the Beta.

Standard Cable length for teh Beta fit is 10 feet but had some 11 feet
cables last time as they were cheaper!

I always have them in stock if desperate.

This cable is 6 foot and I believe the problem was accelerated by being too
long. It went from the control to the bilge, towards the stern, and an
avoidable too sharp bend forward. I'll end up replacing it with a 6 footer
as, I believe, that is the shortest available.

I currently have the fitting that includes the ball-and-socket joint at the
throttle end soaking in penetrating oil. There is what might be a set
screw in the fitting that I haven't successfully coaxed yet.

The delusional optimist in me makes me think the throttle and transmission
cable replacements will be under control soon. I am concerned about the
fuel shut-off (MD6A) cable.

When I bought this boat the only serious alternative I considered was a
Cape Dory 27. I can't express how happy I am with the removable cockpit
sole. I can't imagine how much I would have cursed today without it. My
frustration backing under power in the Vega is way more than compensated
for by the removable sole.

You know, under tight situations in close quarters
manuvering (where the vega sucks), i sometimes
wish the throttle, steering, and fwd/reverse were
all in the same spot.

I am usually standing and am getting better
with time at adjusting controls and steering
with my toes.

When my volvo stop cable finally seized up I replaced it with a cable from a motor bike, easy to source and very long lasting. On the other cables it is not the length of the cable that is critical but the amount of travel of the inner. As Steve says the Beta engines have cables 10 ft long and more but the extra length is easily accomodated in the compartment under the cockpit floor.MikeFrom: Chris Brown svflyaway@...

Good suggestion. Yesterday I ordered the transmission and throttle cables
and took the failed throttle cable to a hardware store (ironmongery in the
UK?) where I was _wrongly_ convinced that my old cable had M5 threads
instead of 10-32. While I was walking later and agonizing over 10-32 to M5
adapters and other improvisations I walked past a motorcycle and had the
same idea (but not yet for the fuel shutoff).

thanx,,,
