Continuous running Cold Machine

Last season my Cold Machine started to occasionally run continuously. I found that if I would shut it off at the breaker for an hour and restart it, everything would work fine. This seams to happen about once a day in the late afternoon or evening. Is this normal or do I need some service. I have had the same type of thing happen to the air conditioner in my RV when it is humid. It seems to just need to be defrosted. The cooler always stays cold but it really messes up my power consumption. Thanks for the help. Hayden Watson S/V Papillon 1988 C30 tr/bs Spokane, WA

HVAC service is called for

sounds to me like an iced up evaporator. It restricts the air flow and lessens the cooling. So then the thermostat keeps calling for cooling. When you shut it off, the ice melts and its starts operating properly. It generally means that the refrigerant is low. Have it serviced. Regards Bud

Bud has got the right answer!

Bud's reply is right on the money and the only thing that I have to add is don't let a marine A/C guy try to sell you a whole new unit because the old one is factory sealed. My 1985 Norcold was factory sealed and I found an old school A/C repairman that silver soldered a fill valve in place and charged me up with a R-19 compatible freon that has been working just fine for over a year. Total cost $125. PM

CHECK THAT THE CONDENCER COIL IS CLEAN AND THE UNIT IS NOT OVER HEATING, IT COULD ALSO BE THE CONTROL MODULE. IF YOU WANT TO SEND IT TO US WE WILL TEST IT FOR FREE AND IF IT IS GOOD ONLY CHARGE YOU FREIGHT BACK. BE SURE TO HAVE A NOTE IN THE BOX ON HOW TO CONTACT YOU IN THE DAY TIME.
