Continuous Jib Sheet

Hi All, I'm trying to run a single, continuous jib sheet through my jib clew on a 22' sloop. I don't intend on adding any shackles, special rigging at all, just a simple system to run back to the cleats so the knots at the jib clew don't keep getting stuck on the side stays. What type of know should I put in the (20 foot) single jib sheet, and how far from center should this be? Should there be a knot on either side or just on the one side? Thanks in advance for your help. Gary

Simple clove hitch will do it.

If you're using super slippery 'tech' braid, then a 'strangler' knot will do .... but you will probably have to eventually cut through it with a VERY sharp knife as the 'strangler' is designed never to slip or be untied. Second way is apply a small 'pendant' to the clew cringle .... just a short line of about 12" that is (short) eyespliced onto the cringle. Then form a simple loop into your sheet at the middle and tie a sheetbend with the 'pendant' onto the loop of the sheet; milk the sheetbend (can be a 'doubled' sheet bend) down until the knot is right-up-to the cringle and cut/whip whats left over from the pendant. The knot will be the smallest knot possible (smaller than a clove hitch through the cringle) ... and the best part it is the knot is 'releaseable' with a pair of pliers when you want to change jibsheets.

Thanks for the tip. You wouldn't happen to have a picture of the completed knot, pendant and cringle? I'm trying to imagine this and how it would end up much smaller. I'm no knot expert either. A sailmaker suggested I do NO pendant at all, just run a single line through the clew and tie a sailor's knot several feet from center. Does this make any sense as an alternative? Thanks for your help! Gary

lark's head

Lark's head is even simpler. However, 20 feet is not enough for your sheet. I have an oday 22, and I run a single 40 foot line in this manner. At 10 feet on each side of your single sheet, the windward sheet isn't long enough to reach around the mast from the clew through the fairlead and to the winch.

Keep it simple

I just upgraded from a Catalina 22. My jib sheet was about 45 to 50 feet long (more than enough). This is what I did (which I learned from a seasoned sailor): Take the bitter ends of the jib sheet and hold them together. Work your way to the center (don't let go of the ends). Once you find the center, make a loop. Put the loop through the jib clew. Feed the bitter ends through the loop. Easy and fast. Sometimes after sailing in heavy air I'd have to massage the knot, but it works like a charm.

We too have a single jib sheet

We connect our with a loop, it works great, we have a common jib sheet for both the genoa and the jib. No know it necessary, the bitter ends through the loops and winch pressure keep the connection perfect.

Same here

I also do the same as John and Ross on my P36-2. Never slipped once; got nice and tight from the pressure. Good Luck Greg

The double sheet bend approach

I use a single jib sheet, with a system I found in Good Old Boat. Here goes: At the clew: pass a short (12") line, lighter gauge than your jibsheet, through the cringle. Doesn't have to be attached: just doubled through the cringle. You'll use this line coming back from the clew to attach the sheet. Mark the sheet at the center point. In my case, I put half an inch of colored whipping about 6" from the center point on each side. But any marking system will do. Fold the sheet at the center point. Attach the short jib line to the sheet using a double sheet bend. The link shows you how to tie this knot. In the link's demo, the blue line is your jib sheet; the red is your short jib line. (In your case, the red line will be a double line, but everything else is the same.) Hope this helps. It works really well for me. If you find you like it, you can simplify by eye-splicing a single short line to the clew cringle, to replace the unattached doubled short line.

Thanks Guys!

Thanks Guys! I took John's suggestion, together with Peter's sheet length and have perfection. You guys are great! Gary
