Continous line roller furler question

I have read a number of postings stating that continous line roller furlers cannot be reefed. Why not? Can't the furling line be tied off after reefing the jib to prevent furler movement?

Reefing

I've had two boats with the Hood Linedrive furler. I could reef the sail just fine. You just have to have a cleat available and a little slack in the furling line. The only problem that I ever had with the system, was re-doing that damn end to end splice. Bill

Continous Line Roller Furler

I agree with Bill. I had a Hood system on my C-27. It wasn't as smooth as the Schaefer I currently have on my C-320. He's right about sewing the two ends of the reefing line together. Mine snapped during a sea trial for a prospect. I climbed on deck and sewed it back together. The hard part was trying to contain the genoa in order to do the repair. BTW, the prospect bought the boat.

In stronger winds the only way I can....

prevent the furler drum from spinning out the reef on the furling line is to tie off the drum to a bow cleat. There is not enough friction between the furling line and drum to hold the reef against the force of the wind to unwind the reefed genoa. Terry

The reason...

...that continuous loop furlers (you will notice that they are not sold as "reefers") have trouble holding is because as the line ages and stretches, the diameter of the line reduces. As the line passes over the drum, the teeth won't hold the bite to prevent the furler from unfurling. That was my problem. Also this occurred when I tried to furl the sail in the wind. Some people have said that if you pull both lines so that the line grips on the roller and cleat it off that way, then this will hold. It will, but I have only had limited success that way. I bought a single line reefer because of that. Call Hood, they will offer a deal on a SL drum.

Updated to the Single Line drum

We updated to the Single Line drum after a particularly nasty episode of furling the genoa in a blow. Never wanted to go through that again. Love the Single Line version. Works smoothly and we can even reef safely now. We could and did reef with the CL but always worried about it slipping out in high wind. Very risky IMHO.

Thanks for the quick responses!

I also have a Hood. I'll see how it works on the boat...and if it needs to be swaped out, that's what I'll do. I appreciate all your imput!

I don't know who ever thought that they came up with a better idea when they crafted the continuous line, but I despise them for it. I HATE it, but the replacement is just too expensive, so I have to live with it. I would almost prefer having to hoist the jib each time.

Retro fit it

I had a hood single line roller furler on on old oday 31 (1986) i used to own. after a couple of frustrating seasons (reef slipping out in high winds) I had the yard replace it with a single line retro fit made by hood. all they had to do was replace the drum and line. everything else remained. it only cost about $600. money VERY WELL spent.
