I've been reading through Rigger's Apprentice by Brion Toss which casually mentions that a constrictor or double constrictor knot can be used for clamping hoses. (Page 11).

Has anyone heard of this or used it in practice? Seemed kind of out-there to me.

why would you want to unless it was an emergency and you didn't have spares (anticipation skill refresher required).

A constrictor or double constrictor can substitute in an emergency ... but the ultimate tensile strength of the wire/rope/cord has to be quite strong and must not 'creep' (plastic or non-elastic deformation) during the application ... 'plastics' have the untowards characteristic of 'creep' so always be mindful that any material used in a constrictor may loosen ('creep') over time.

Double constrictor:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WoDzSltVJSo note that the 'locking portion' of this knot us under the loops .... requires a knife to untie!

In order to get a constrictor know very tight you need two marline spikes or the equal and need to know how to tie a marline spike hitch. You brace one spike with your feet and pull the other with both hands.

Have you seen the Clamptite? An emergency, make-any-size hose clamp tool. I'm working my way toward using it for all replacement hose clamps.

Stick to a hose clamp, a constrictor knot, is not something that you are going to clamp a hose with. I was in the merchant marine for many years, and most of that old stuff was used in desperate times, when they didnt have the right equipment, and is only used now (in the merchant marine) to show off you know more knots than the next guy. Its like puting an eye splice on a wire, everyone in my day could do it, but it wasnt (even then) as strong as fitting a couple of buldog clips on the wire to hold it.

You would never get enough purchase on that knot, to keep a hose under any sort of pressure ie a garden hose connected.

I remember someone at sea, showing me how to tie a "thief knot" it was a reef knot, or a square knot, but instead of the two ends being at the top, or at the bottom, one end was at the top, one end was at the bottom, he said "you can tie your kit bag with this, and if someone goes into it, you know they have been there" i said, but suerly, if you find some of your gear missing, you will know someone has been there "he said yes, but with this you know from looking at the knot if someone has been there, because they will replace your thief knot, with a reef knot, I said, "what if they replace it with a thief knot, because they know that game" he said, then you wont know they have been in your bag" i said, well not until you find out what is missing, so it is not much good is it, better off with a bycle lock.

What do you mean by bulldog clips? Nicopress fittings?

Funny thief knot story.
No i had to look up what a nicropress fitting was, that looks more of a permanent fitting, that involves specialist tools. Bulldog clips are like a U bolt, with a plate, you put it round the two wires, and run the bolts up tight, the plate bites into the wire, and stops it slipping, you would put at least two on to make an eye on the wire, I suppose they could break, but i have never heard of them failing, provided they are put on correctly.

Never saddle a dead horse (the saddle goes on the working part, not the dead end).
