I am considering purchase of a Catalina 22' with a trailer. It is the pop-top type with rolling furler system. I would really appreciate any advice regarding things to look for and look-out for regarding this boat?? It has the swing keel. Thanks

My wife and I purchased a 1983 Cat 22 with similar features about 10 years ago and we love the boat. We have sailed it on a smaller inland lake and more recently on Lake Michigan.
I would suggest paying a surveyor to check out the boat.
Definitely check out the standing rigging as well as the integrity of chain plates and stanchions. Check the conditions of the gelcoat and if the is any evidence of water damage.
Check out the condition of your trailer. Especially if you plan to do a lot of trailer sailing.
If you search this website further, there are some excellent articles that will offer much greater detail on exactly how to examine and evaluate a prospective purchase.
Good luck and happy sailing.

Mal,

Probably the single most important thing to look at is the hull/deck integrity. Walk around the deck, in the cockpit, and feel for softness. Look inside on the bulkheads, under the windows, etc. for water damage. Look around chainplates and anything attached to the deck to see if gobs of sealant have been applied in an attempt to stop leaks. Don't be alarmed if you see small cracks (crazing) around some of the deck hardware. These are most likely superficial. But if you see lots of cracks around structural members (eg. chainplates for stays and shrouds, mast-step, motor mount), these might mean there is major work to be done.

Check out Sailnetdotcom. Click on the section on 'Buying a Boat.' Look for the sticky thread 'Boat Inspection Trip Tips' by Sailingdog. It will provide you with more boat buying help that you hoped for. After you inspect the boat using his tips, you might not need a survey (ie. you'll either be able to reject the boat outright, or you'll find the boat to be worthy of consideration). If you find the boat to be worthy of consideration, you might find that there are things that will help you negotiate the price. At any rate, it will help you make an informed decision.

Beyond that, there are too many things to look at to be able to tell you in a few short paragraphs here. On the plus side, C22s are pretty simple boats. Most of the things that break or go wrong are easily addressed by the do-it-yourselfer...especially with the help of all the DIY boat owners on these forums.:)

Good luck,

Pat

We bought a '85 C22 about six weeks ago. Trailer, pop top, etc. Has a 6 h.p. 4 stroke outboard which is sufficient. We love it. We launced/retrieved the boat @ 3 times which involved stepping the mast which two people can do easily. Now the boat is in a marina for the summer. We do not have a furler and really wish we did. We did not get a survey because the boat was only $3k. We bought "Inspecting An Aging Sailboat" at Barnes and Nobles and combined that with info from this site to do our inspection. This is our first boat and even though we looked at boats up to 30' we think it is a great fit for us.

We bought a 1977 Cat. 22 just like the one you describe. With the trailer was only $2400. I have had to remove the windows and put new gaskets in, re-do all the teak, new bow eye, re-seal chainplates and deck fittings. I also re-placed the mast step plate. Originally it came with an aluminum one that is weak. I put on a new stainless one from Catalina Direct, good choice. It seems at that age the major problems are dried out seals and the factory bedding is poor at best. Love this little boat though.
