I'm considering purchasing a new Genoa (135%) for my O'Day 192. Bacon Sails (http://www.baconsails.com) has a new online SailQuoter, and the price they gave me for the headsail, with sunbrella, sewn tell tails and leach line was $481.22. This seems pretty cheap, as DR Marine had the same type of sail for $850.00. One of Bacon's sales guys even e-mailed me offering an additional 5% off if I order before the end of the year. Has anyone had any experience with sails made by Bacon? Its a dacron sail, but I'm a little wary of the stitch and cut being as good as some of the more well known lofts. Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Will

No worries... the quote Bacon gave was actually for a roller furling sail, forgot to mention that. Plus I live about 100 miles from Annapolis, so the proximity is a factor in this decision as well, although I did check out your sail quoter and Chandlery.

Be aware that Bacons, per se, is neither a sail maker nor a sail loft. They broker a lot of used sails, and gear. They used to use Rolly Tasker to make new sails for them, but am not sure that is still the case since the owner, Dixie Bacon, died. Sails made by Tasker have decent reputation. Call Steve at Bacons and ask him who makes their sails now --- and then run a check on the quality of whomever that is.

For the slight price difference, I'd go with the sail Phil pointed out... it is from a business that you have an existing relationship with and helps support a forum you obviously use. :) I'm also betting the shipping on the Bacon Sails genny is more than the $17 price differential.

ditto Warren's comments

I had a 160 roller made by Bacon's four years ago. It's held up well in ChesBay. Call Steve.

Many Chesapeake Bay Boaters will verify the excelent reputation Bacons has enjoyed over the years for their dedication to customer satisfaction.
I'd second Warren's suggestion that you confirm who presently makes their sails and get some info on the sail cloth type & weight.
