My wife and I are considering cruising up north, intercoastal waterway to be exact. We have owned our 1981 Hunter 30 for a little over a year now and we are considering if this is the right boat for cruising an estimated 3-6 months before the kids come along. We have been looking at the the 88-94 Hunter 30's and besides being a lot smarter layout and newer boat I would like to know the benefits or negatives of purchasing the newer 30. Due to our current Delta sailing we are hoping to stay in the 30ft. range. Any input on this matter would be greatly appreciated. David & Jenn KEHAAR SSC

David and Jenn..

The Hunter 30 you have now is a great boat for doing what you described. Twenty two years ago, Karen and I bought our Hunter 33, it was new, we were young and we had very few reasons not to just take off and go cruising. We hesitated and, now, 22 years later, we still have the same boat, our son (19yrs soon to be 20) is just about out of the nest, and we are still dreaming about going. But now I'm 50 (not twenty something) and here we are again, looking at the horizon. Would we do anything different? Prob. not, but it would have been nice to satisfy the desire to cruise before life got too complicated and we got too old. There is never a better time than now, before starting a family, to do things as a young couple with your lives completely before you. I hope you take advantage of your good health, your youth and freedom, life does not always turn out the way you plan, it just kinda happens inspite of your plans.

I am also considering

I have a 1980 hunter 30, I am 33years old and just sold my house, I am strongley considering sailing south for a year with my girl friend, there is no rewind botton on life and I am about 95% sure I am going to just do it

Our '77 h27 is a great cruising boat

The real question is, "Do you and your wife enjoy the time below on your 30 footer?" The Admiral and I really like our h27. It's just right for us, and we spend between 20 and 25 nights on her each summer, always cruising for at least on full week. And that is on the Great Lakes with some pretty big wind and waves at times. I think you have a great cruising boat. The only question is whether the two of you really want to spend time on her. If not, sell her and get one you both like! David Lady Lillie

Thank You!

I would like to thank you for your help with our decision. My wife and I plan to keep our Hunter 30 and prepare the boat to leave next year when we both finish our B.A.'s. Today we were able to go aboard a 1991 Hunter 30, true it is a very nice boat, but we still appreciate some of the classic looks of our "KEHAAR". I feel that we would only be doing the same prep work for the cruise with a $30,000 boat increase on top of everything else. Once again, thank you for your time.
