I live in San Diego and would be living on the boat full time.
The majority of my time would be singlehanding.
Boat would just be used for local coastal cruising, long weekends at Catalina Island, and a few weeks in the summer exploring the Channel islands.
I know very little about the characteristics of a CC over AC, except that it usually provides a larger aft berth, you stay a little dryer while sailing, and it can be a little sportier docking.

I appreciate any and all constructive advice.

thanks

Blair,

Found this post and it's a little old, but here's my input. I had a 36CC and the layout is pretty similar to the 42 as most of the additional space was more storage related. I really liked the CC design, but there were several drawbacks:
1. As you sit much higher, looking under the sails for oncoming boats takes some getting used to.
2. I like to lay down/sleep in the cockpit. Make sure the 42CC has the cockpit room you'd expect.
3. Windage is definitely a factor with these boats.
4. Steps/ladder between the cockpit and salon. Some of the CCs have a lot of steps! Makes livingaboard something of a challenge.
5. My experience is that the CC was wetter because you are closer to the bow.

On the plus side:
1. Large back cabin that is more usable underway.
2. Easy engine access!
3. Having a lot of room between cabins makes for more privacy.
4. Being closer to the bow makes close manuevers at least a littler easier to see.

Hope this helps!

Even at anchor, higher up from the water, you'd rock more side-to-side in the waves. You won't be able to fill your glass as much.
