I am considering a not so old Catalina 310. What are some of the things to look for or problem areas for these boats? Good things would also be nice to hear.

Good Boat

I have a C320, which is very similar. Just get a good surveyor who knows the Catalinas to go over it thoroughly. Look for the big expensive items: Check the keel/rudder for any signs of grounding damage. Also the hull in general for gelcoat scrapes/dings. Make sure all the maralon through-hull valves are working smoothly. Go over the engine very carefully, especially checking the fuel system, cooling system, and exhaust system. Any signs of oil leaks on a 310 should be very suspicious, since it's still such a new production boat. If possible, inspect the fuel tank interior for signs of algea buildup, etc. Go over the electronics carefully. Make sure the batteries are in good shape. Make sure all the instruments, radio, GPS, radar, autopilot, etc are in good shape. Also, find out how many of the "extras" come with the boat at the sale price. e.g., ground tackle, PFDs, fenders, dock lines, etc. Outfitting a new boat with all this stuff adds up. Good luck. --Ron
