Considering a 212 Hunter

I am fairly new to sailing although I have been a power boater for 25 years. I have had a power boat in the Santa Cruz (California) Harbor for 6 years so I know what to expect from the Ocean. I am looking for a small sail boat that I can trailer to different areas and still be seaworthy enough to sail the semi protected waters of Monterey Bay at Santa Cruz. (Strictly for fun) Is the Hunter 212 the boat I am looking for? There is so little information out there. The price is very attractive. Is there anyone out there doing something similar? I like the 212. It seems straight forward enough and I like not having to mess with water holding tanks of like the ones on the 24 hunter. Any helpful comments and information will be appreciated.

How protected?

Years back I had an ODay 23 with swing trunk center board which I sailed on NJ rivers and protected bay. However several trimes I tried the more open waters of Barnegat Bay NJ and found that with winds kicking up to 20-25, I didn't have "enough boat" and keel. Sailing was quite an exercise. Ended up going leeward as much as forward. I made a jump to H28.5 accordingly- but its not trailerable. Perhaps 25 footer "semi-trailerable" is worth looking into. I am not familiar with your sailing area but you may want to determine or hear from other posts how much of a "lake boat" (excluding the Great Lakes of course) you really want. Jim McCue
