considering 9.2a, engines?

Hello all,

First, a big thank you to of the regulars here for the wealth of information on this site!

I'm looking to move up to a ~30ft boat and I am strongly leaning toward the S2.

But I am confused about the engines. It seems that the newer models have larger engines, unfortunately my budget is more in line with the older models (say earlier than 1980). So I am wondering what engines were original equipment over the years.

For example I was looking at '79 with the original 12 hp yanmar. Would this be a 1 cyl or 2 cyl engine? if its a 1 cyl is it really a 12 hp engine?

Engine options

I have seen a very early boat, a 79 if I recall, with a gas powered 30hp Atomic four. Parts availability is good for this engine if you are okay with gas for a fuel. The engine seems to have a larger engine cover which takes up more space in the cabin.

The two most common engines in the early 80's are the 1 cyl yanmar 12 hp and the 15hp 2 cyl yanmar 2QM15, which I have. It is quite reliable. I posted a question years ago...two equal boats, but one with a 1 cyl for 2-3K less and one with a 2 cyl and everyone voted the 2 cyl, as 1 cyl vibrate like mad. Both these engines can be reliable, but availability of some critical parts (i.e. a new head) at a reasonable price is a problem.

In general you will pay the most for a newer boat with a newer, larger engine. 2 cyl sell for more than 1 cyl and diesels sell for more than gasoline. Prices are ranging from 12-25K depending on that and condition for aft cockpit and more for a center cockpit.

We Have A 1978 9.2a And Has A 1 Cyl Yanmar 10hp. We Can Go About 6.2 Knots With It In Good Weather.

S2 9.2A Engines

I removed a Yanmar YSE12 from my 9.2A and installed a used Yanmar 3GMD, a 20hp 3 cylinder engine. The boat goes a little faster in calm water, but the most improvement is in waves, wind and current, I can maintain a higher speed with less vibration. The YSE12 leaked oil, vibrated and was heavier and messier that the 3GMD is.

We have a Volvo Penta Diesel MD2020. Great with 20hp, reliable, starts every time with the included glow plugs. Made the boat able to sunset cruise both Buzzards Bay and Vineyard Sound without considering the current leaving Woods Hole Passage.
