Connection window at base of mast?

Just got back home from my Hunter 34. Got splashed Friday and mast was stepped same day. Yesterday was too nasty for it, but today I spent 1 1/2 hour in the bosun chair, to try and understand why my radar (JRC 1500) did not work. I had to re-install it last week and it had tested OK at the shop. Power does reach the unit, but breaker trips if I keep the ON button depressed longer than would normally turn the unit on. It is not a faulty negative ground as the breaker would trip immediately. Amps tests at 3 amps (unit rated at 5). Everything looked good with the connectors inside the radome, so I am suspecting a connector got crushed at the base of the mast when stepping it. Which means that I now have to go back to the crane, unstep again and find the culprit. I am getting real tired of playing this game and would like to cut a small window about 2 inches from the bottom of the mast, which is deck stepped. I have searched the archives to see if anybody has done it. No luck in finding anything. Questions: would it affect the structural integrity of the aluminum mast if I cut a small window about 2" wide X 3 1/2" high. Of course the corners would have a radius. It would be covered with a SS plate which would be held by small self tapping screws. It would really be a tremendous help to me as I have to step and unstep the mast 3 times each season when I travel out on vacation. Any help would be appreciated.

Claude, I have, and your right, it's great.

You can see where I put mine on my web site. Go to the third film strip and scroll down. You'll see a shot of us stepping the mast and pulling the wires through the inspection opening. Lower still is a shot of the plate closed up so you can see where it went without causing interference. Rigrite.com sells 'em for $20.00 US, screws included.

Fred, Where can they be found on the rigrite website? I looked and could not find it. Thanks, Bryon Thomas "Shore Leave"

Mast base window

Did you exyend the length of the wires comming up from the boat- Fred? Mine are very short- I wouldnt think they would be long enough to pull out for connection. This is a project pretty high up on my list as it is just too dangerous to have fingers under there twice a year.

Bryon and Richard

Here you go. Bryon go here, but wait for it to load and then scroll to the bottom. http://www.rigrite.com/Spars/Kenyon_Spars/4873-cruising.html It's listed on most of their mast pages. Or you could just call them and ask for part #RR-72-99. :) Richard, I rewired my rig when I rebuilt and painted it. Every inch is new and I still didn't leave enough slack coming out of the deck. If I had to do it again, I wouldn't even install the plugs until the mast was stepped. But it still is a lot better than not having the plate and I have slack below but would have to break the 5200 seal. Because you lower your rig twice a year, this plate is a no brainer.

Mast was replaced with Charleston Spar

Thanks Fred, 2 years ago I had to replace the mast. I found a Charleston Spar that fit without a problem (just a little grinding of the deck base). I have found the plate. I have also emailed Charleston Spar. Still waiting for a reply from them, although I don't think there would be any more problems doing that on their mast than on a Kenyon.
