Looking at a 30 Cat but 1623 hrs on engine. Should I be concerned? What does a rebuild run?

I've got a Universal M18 in my C30 with about 1100 (confirmed hours), probably more like 1600 actual hours and she runs like a top!
So much depends on how it was cared for though I'd think. Mine was well cared for and I've only had to rebuild the raw water pump and do regular maintenance on it these last seven years.
Don't know what a rebuild would cost, but my Universal parts guy assures me that he's serviced many Universal engines with 5000 hours on them that were in good shape, so 1600 hours doesn't seem like a high time engine from what I've heard.
An engine survey may put your mind at east though.

Bought our 1986 boat in 1998 with 888 engine hours. Now has 2450 hours. Runs like a top. M25, pretty much the same engine. Service it regularly, it'll work for many more years. Determine the Kubota engine block (D950) and buy your parts from a Kubota dealer (thermostats, secondary fuel filter, other non-marine parts). One of our skippers got over 5000 eh on his.

LC 1623 hrs is absolutely nothing to worry about!
From LC...1623 is nothing to worry about as long as the engine has been taken care of. I have a 1985 Catalina 30 with about 2,000 hours and it runs like a top. Actually, the M-25 is one tuff engine--really tough!!!! There will always be small breakdowns or things to replace but you can expect probably double the hours that are on it before any major work. When I say major I mean rings, rods and mains. A rebuilt would probably (roughly) around $6.000. LC PS One thing you will find is that there is a 9 pin connector at both ends of the cable that connects the control panel to the engine components that will give you trouble at some point as the pins corrode and loose connectivity and also start annealing the wire in the heaver amp. draw wires like starter circuit.. This connector can and should be replaced...I used a terminal block (TB) with 15 spaces on the engine end and a combo fused TB on the other in the sail locker. I replaced the wiring as well with marine grade larger wire and made up connectors properly crimped. You will also find that the people who designed the wiring have made mistakes in wire sizing--too small for most circuits especially the starter circuit!!!!! This can be fixed fairly easily.
