I am interested in connecting a computer at the navigation table hooked to the GPS and then send the signal to a portabled DVD player at the helm, has anybody done this arrangement? Is so, what equipment has been used. Best regards, Gene

Is the DVD player seaworthy?

What kind of data ports are on the DVD player? What kind of data sending ports are on the computer? If you really want to geek it out, try a wireless network. Most of the components are pretty low power. Unfortunately, they are all AC. Markdb S/V Basement of the Science Building

Okay, I have to ask

why on earth would you want a DVD player at the helm and how do you input a signal to a player anyway?

Rick, what I would like to have is the ability to see a larger screen with my navigation data from the GPS at the cockpit, I find the laptop to be combersome when I am behind the wheel. Now I use the Garmin 76C map, but it is kind of small and not in color, so the idea is to have one of those new DVD players 7" or so and get the input from the laptop to it, it is not because I want to watch a movie while I am sailing. Thanks for your input. Gene

Whew!

yeah, your post sorta read like you'd be watching Cap'n Ron while charging up the channel. Anyway, I get it now. You basically want a small repeater screen at the helm using the data from your computer. I've been researching the same thing with marginal success. Although your laptop will drive a standard PC 'slave' monitor that you could mount elsewhere, a small screen designed for NTSC signal (TV) won't be able to use a computer's input. I've also been searching for a small PC flat panel that that would be near daylight viewable (you'll need several hundred nits) and weather resistant. They exist but are very pricey. For the same money you can fund a dedicated plotter system and I gather that like me, you're trying to do this on a budget. Good luck in your search. I'll be interested in what you come up with.

Think a little bigger.

Gene, I have been talking to the guy's at PC Tech in Cheboygan about building me a custom computer for on my boat. I have thought about having a monitor that I could view from the helm for chart plotting. I have not worked out all the details on this yet but the computer would also have all of the TV connections so that it would also serve double duty. I read about this in Latitudes and Attitudes and it seems very sensible. I will be working with Dave on this in the summer so stop by Walstrum's to see what we come with.

Got a 17 inch LCD monitor

at Frys for $179 after rebate which I am going to mount in a plexiglass box. I will let you know how it works out.
