Not a good idea.

Patrick: This is not a good idea. You want to get the load off the deck and it is also a good time to service the mast head (replace sheaves etc). This is big job, it you are going to do it you should do it correctly once.

A few years ago, a friend with a 1980 Hunter 25 took his compression post apart with the mast up. He came back a few hours later and gasped when he saw that he now had a very visible sag in the cabin top at the mast step. We quickly tried to replace the compression post, which involved hammering it back together and trying to lever the cabin top up from the inside. This was not fun. My suggestion: don't ever do this.

it can be done on a hunter budget

you need to install a temporary post next to the original one before it is removed. be sure to release tension from the rigging turn buckles before you remove the post. getting the wires installed in the new one may be a challenge.

In Process - Mast Down

I am currently in the process of replacing the compression post on my '94 H27. I am doing it in the water with the mast down. I chose to drop the mast because I was worried that with the stays loose, the mast would not be properly supported in the Texas winds we have this time of the year. I am very glad that I have the mast down because of what I have found after diging into this to include: rebuilding the support between the hull and cabin floor, replacement of the cabin floor in the head area, replacement of the compression post, replacement of the bulkhead between the head and salon, and rebuilding of the cabin top around the mast step. All of this is required because of water damage from leaks where the wiring comes through the mast step. Some of the issues were know from the pre-purchase survey, but the true extent of the damage was not. At the same time, I am taking the opportunity to rewire the mast, replace the steaming light, rewire the bilge pump, freshwater pump, mast to keel ground, install new CD player, replace sanitary and fresh water hoses, rebuild the cabinets, and whatever else comes up. Steve's comment is right on... Do it RIGHT, do it ONCE! Search the archives on compression post and mast step and there is a lot of good info out there. If anyone faced with this issue would like to take this offline, feel free to contact me throuth the owner's directory. Chuck S/V Following Sea

Yes, I did it on my former 31

(with my father's helpl) and I'm a fairly conservative guy. Search the archives as I've posted detailed steps on how we did it, as well as lots of other discussion on the 31's in particular. not as big a deal as folks would have you think.
