Compression Post

I'm doing my compression post work. Got the cover off, and the post looks good. Tiny bit of rot at the top right under the bolts for the mastplate. Scraped it out with a screwdriver ( 1/4 in square ), and good wood is everywhere around. So I think I don't need to replace the actual post. ( thoughts..??) I do need to replace the I-beam in the bilge supporting the post. My main question is, do I need to support the compression post while the I beam is out? My mast is off, so the only weight is that of the post, and the weight of the deck being supported at the post top. I'm thinking no, but was wondering if anyone who has done this had problems with the floor sagging, and / or not being able to get the new I beam back in ( easily ). Lastly, I'm guessing I'll use a dremmel to cut the fiberglass from around the bottom of the I beam. That what others did? Thanks, John

Related Question

The fiberglass at the base of my compression post is cracked (3/16" at bottom). I probed inside it for softness but it seems solid. What am I probing? It feels like wood. The deck is level which leads me to think the base is ok and I can just patch it up. Any suggestions? Thanks

Check out the compression post question in the Mid-sized boat forum. I posted a detailed response there on I-beam replacement. Good luck!
