I hear a lot of folks talking about checking the mast compression post. I don't know anyting about compression posts. I have a 1981 Hunter 30' and I am looking for information on how to check and maintain the compression post in my boat. Can anyone point me to a good source for information or offer any tips on what to do? Thanks!

Fred: Check the forum archives. I believe that the problem on the Cherubinis is the platform that the compression post sits on. If you keep your bilge dry and treat the mounting plate to prevent corrosion you may never have a problem.

Post

The biggest problem I had with my compression post was the wood from the cabin overhead to the cabin sole. There was water intrusion from above that had started to rot the wood post. This is a pretty easy replacement after you get the surround off. If the iron base below the cabin sole is rotted with rust it can be repaired with epoxy. With the post removed drill a small hole through the cabin sole over the center of the hollow iron post. Fill the area with epoxy and wrap the outside with glass cloth and epoxy.

I also have an 81 H30. When I inspected the iron post, I noted that the fiebeerglass putty around it had deteriorated, and the post was rusty. I scraped it, applied naval jelly to neutralize the rust, then built a collar and poured instant set urethane around it. Sail up to Windmill Point and I will show you how it worked.

Replace the I Beam

I have a 78 H30 that had compression post problems before I bought it. The previous owner had the old compression post removed and replaced and the steel I beam that it sits on replaced as well. The old I beam was severly rusted and really could not be fixed. The new beam is encased in fiberglass. You can find the beam in the forward section of the bilge, directly under the forward bulkhead which encases the compression post.
