I have a 1980 Hunter 30. There is a piece of plywood approx. 1 inch thick supporting the post directly under the sole which is then supported by a piece of I beam between the keel and the plywood. The post is a little off center of the keel, thus the need for the plywood to bridge the difference. My problem is the plywood has deteriated because of moisture and is failing. How do I go about replacing it.

How's the I-beam

I just replaced the severely corroded I-beam on my '78 H30 last spring. Replacing the plywood would require the same process. Also, if the plywood's going, how's the I-beam doing? Anyway, with the mast unstepped (it's probably the only way) I could fit a small bottle jack between the keel and the cabin floor to jack the compression post up and get the I-beam out. You should be able to maneuver the jack (maybe with supplemental supports) so you can get the plywood out the same way. Then just have new piece fabricated and slip it back in. You may want to epoxy coat it to protect it from moisture down the road.
