A crack in the floor of my 1980 C22 needs repair and any help would be of great value. At the base of the compression post where the floor raises up from the center isle walkway I have a crack that is 3 inches long by 1/4 inch wide. When looking in the forward dinette seat locker the fiberglass that spans from the seatback bulkhead to the hull is collapsed and fractured. This fiberglass span was so thin that it appeared to be decrative rather than structural. There is a 3 by 3 inch wood beam under the compression post that has been built in but it stops well short of the hull. What stops the floor pan assembly from flexing down towards the hull pan? It is this flex that is cracking the floor. Any help would be great. I have a good bit of fiberglass experence and a good shop to work in so I want to make a solid repair. Thanks, Ray

Compression Post

Ray, I think your going to find you have one other problem as well. You are going to need to remove the tabernacle (mast plate) and check for deck damage I bet if you look at the base of the mast you will see the deck sagging around the tabernacle. I have a few pictures of the keel trunk that might be of help, if you want them we will hook up via email. A friend of mine had a very similar project a few years ago, the cause, water in the core that entered in and around the tabernacle.

Ken, You're right about the tabernacle.

When looking at the underside of the tabernacle you can see that the entire center section is sitting 1/2 inch lower that the outside ends just before the sidewall of the headliner rounds downward. The 2x4 that should be glassed in above the keel trunk has run away to never never land if it was even there in the first place. I have made up a structure out of 3/4 and 1 inch steel box tubing and 1/4 steel flat stock that stradles the compression post from top to the floor and ties into the center chainplate with a diagonal down strut. There also is a riser that runs vertically next to the cabin windows and supports a cross bar that braces the roofline from side to side. Suprisingly you can still move through to the potty without any extra contorsions. The thin blown in fiberglass layer that goes from the cabin floor pan to the hull section inside both the port and starboard lockers is broken from the rise in the isle at the potty clear back to the dinette. I was thinking of glassing onto the hull a shaped 5/8 inch thick, 6 inch wide plywood strip below the compression post in front of the keel tub. This would run 18 inches outward on each side of the hull centerline. I was then going to inject foam into the space between the floor isle and the hull as far back on both sides of the keel tub as possible. I then will fiberglass that area in both lockers that is now broken. What are your thoughts about this repair? I do not have any other cracking around the keel tub. I can be E-mailed through this site. Thanks, Ray Bowles
