well here are some pics of the hull just under the cabin sole in the head area...i cut the sole out in order to get to the compression post blocking and also replace the plywood substrate that held the sole

the 1st pic is of the head area with all removed
pic #2 is the cut out of the sole

pics # 3-6 are of the rotten support between the sole and the hull and that is the area where the compression post is supposed to rest....

i am sure that Bob M will be glad to see these as he has been concerned about his for a long time

S2 9.2A rotten mast step

See my reply to cwjones321 on 5/15/2011. My boat had NO support under the compression post except the floor plywood. There was nothing there to rot away so the floor eventually sank down under the load from the mast . Were all of the S2 sailboats built this way? It's too late to complain to the manufacturer but everyone who owns one of these needs to be alert to the problem.

WOW. Woody. I had no idea you planned to take your boat this far apart. Is the support beam just tabbed to the hull (as I suspect) or is it encapsulated with glass?

its just tabed to the hull if it had been encapsulated i may not have had this repair to perform.......or had it been flooded for so long with saltwater it would have been ok to i think as saltwater pickels the wood as opposed to rotting it like fresh water does....

actually that was not a problem as the drain hose goes in to the bilge...now that is a problem given the stinch that will grow in the bilge...the damage was done by the floding of the boat and not draining or pumping it out .....

ok after digging out the rotted support.......the reason they rot out so easly...is they used a 18" pine 2/4 for the block and it wasnt even coated with anything ......this beffudles me as to why they would use all that teak every where else and then use pine in the most critical part of the boat:doh:.........

Easy to shape? Was it shaped to match the hull...or just set in a bed of epoxy mush like the engine beds?

Good pics Woody. Very helpful to understand my 8.5. It looks like there was no weep hole for water to get past the support beam at the lowest part/centerline of the hull. Water may be trapped there until the heel of a tack allows it to run past the support beam??
